Far infrared rays are part of the sun's natural spectrum. The radiant energy produced by an infrared sauna is the same as heat from the sun, with the exclusion of the ultraviolet rays. A heat source, (usually ceramic heating elements), emits infrared waves that penetrate and relax the body as increased blood circulation warms the skin. A flood of sweat and toxins is released through the skin's open pores as the warm blood circulates deeper throughout the body.
An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to create heat. These saunas are sometimes called far-infrared saunas — "far" describes where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. A traditional sauna uses heat to warm the air, which in turn warms your body. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you.
An infrared sauna is a dry sauna, which means it does not need any moisture or steam to create heat and is usually comprised of a wooden ‘room’, which you go inside and sit. It uses infrared light that creates radiant heat, which is absorbed by the skin surface providing a deep, penetrating heat.
How does it work?
The infrared light creates a heat that is transferred to the skin surface and absorbed. This heats the body directly, rather than just warming the external air. Infrared heat is easily absorbed, it penetrates the joints, muscles and tissues and raises the core temperature. This absorbed heat causes sweating and increased heart rate – similar effects to what you might experience if you have done some moderate exercise.
Sweating is one of the body’s most natural ways to eliminate toxins, making it a crucial part of detoxification. When compared to traditional Swedish saunas, infrared saunas allow you to eliminate about seven times more toxins.
Infrared sauna therapy promotes relaxation by helping to balance your body’s level of cortisol, your body’s primary stress hormone. The heat generated by the sauna will also help to relax muscles and relieve tension throughout the body, allowing you to relax and de-stress.
Traditional saunas consist of a small room or space that is heated with a heater that sits in one corner. The heater is powered by electricity, gas, wood or other fuel. In traditional native American sweat lodges, the space is heated with hot rocks that were previously placed in a fire. This type of sauna uses a lot of electricity or gas, and must be very hot to work properly.
· Far infrared saunas use metallic, ceramic or black carbon elements for heating that mainly emit in the far infrared range. The electric heating elements are spread around the sauna space. Unfortunately, all of these far infrared saunas give off stray electromagnetic fields that may be extremely harmful. Please avoid all far infrared saunas for this reason.
